The southernmost exit of the garden led them on a long corridor lined with heavy chamber doors. One was wide open and festive light spilled out along with the merry hiatus of a hundred drunken voices. A vulgar song pranced the lips of the tuneless, Belial himself conducting the choir.

No one bothered with the furtive passing of two lowly demons outside. They were on their way to fetch more wine after all, weren’t they? And they knew the throne room was forbidden, didn’t they? They surely wouldn’t…

The double gothic gates of the royal chamber parted for Lucifer immediately, recognizing their true sovereign and the watchful cerberuses licked his feet piously.

Regardless of the welcome though, the atrocious sight they beheld upon entering kindled shivering spinal chills to rake their very being.

Atop a basaltic pedestal was the throne of Hell set and encircling it steel pikes composed a horrible scene with impaled corpses of brutalized angels and men and demons alike. Befouled blood pooled black on the marble floor, drowning feasting worms.

The crown of thorns, diadem of exiled glory of the unholy nobles and now usurpation’s trophy from Belial, rested upon its altar reserved especially for ceremonial occasions.

Lucifer’s pulse quickened as memories dormant writhed to life again. His heart pounded a war drumbeat inside his chest ready to explode. With trembling fingers he reached out for what was once rightfully his…

A chilling shriek rose all of a sudden and before he had time to withdraw, a vice like grip locked around his wrist. Belial’s sadistic eyes flashed inside the gloom.

“Just what do you think you’re doing miserable thief?”

Lucifer always favored the more direct methods of communicating his true feelings. He did not miss a beat.

His free fist blurred and then smote Belial on the chin and sent him rolling unto the floor. The demon blinked dazed, watching the swirling lights before him and feeling the numb, throbbing pain.

Bronze horns sounded alarm at that moment and the urgent call to arms spread like fire across the fortress. Instantly a hundred demons rushed in the throne chamber with ravening war-cries, wielding spears, scimitars, axes and flails.

“Stay back, stay back!” growled Belial commandingly as he rose to his feet. “They’re mine!” a grimace of malice marred his handsome countenance and his short, curly hair seemed like snakes on Medusa’s head. He was an olive skinned youth, with muscles chiseled to perfection, a raging god of classical antiquity.

And then the angels cast aside their disguise and their glory shone. Face to face with the tyrant they smiled fearlessly.

“Lucifer!” gasped the arch-demon as recognition dawned. “How…where… but… What’s going on here?”

“A funeral!”

Belial nodded. A claymore of black steel materialized in his grasp.

“Let us see then whom the coffin fits best!” he roared in challenge.
